Legal Dimensions of AI in the EUThursday, July 17, 2025 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Eastern 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Central 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Mountain 10:00 am - 11:00 am Pacific Program: This webinar offers a focused exploration of the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI in the European Union. It will cover three interrelated areas that are critical for developers, researchers, legal professionals, and policymakers engaging with AI technologies. 1. Copyright versus AI Training in the EU: The EU Copyright Directive introduces a text and data mining (TDM) exception to copyright, aimed at supporting innovations such as AI. This exception is to enable the collection of data, which is essential for training AI systems. However, the TDM exception itself is not without controversy and challenges. This section will therefore explore the impact of the current EU legal framework on the use of copyrighted content for AI training. It will also comment on the EUIPO study on generative artificial intelligence and copyright and discuss relevant case law on the subject. 2. Deepfake in the EU AI Act: The session will then explore how the EU Artificial Intelligence Act addresses one of today's most controversial technologies: deepfakes. We will unpack the transparency obligations for synthetic media, explore how the AI Act defines deepfakes. The discussion will highlight the balance that the EU is trying to strike between innovation and accountability in the age of AI-generated realities. Speaker: | Monika Gorska, Ph.D., LLM.
