Canadian Privacy & Data Governance Update

Amendments to provincial laws, and proposals from the federal government, may have a significant impact on your organization or your client’s obligations when managing personal information. As a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C), Ellie assists clients on a broad range of strategic and practical privacy and data governance matters including drafting privacy policies, responding to data subject requests, representing clients before privacy regulators, complying with transparency requirements for artificial intelligence and automated decision-making systems, assisting with complex corporate transactions involving data-based assets, complying with Canada's anti-spam legislation, and preparing for and responding to data and privacy breaches.
Ellie routinely handles freedom of information matters and provides advice to government institutions on their disclosure obligations and to third parties affected by access requests. She was also counsel to the Toronto Star in the precedent-setting Supreme Court of Canada appeal about whether the estate court files of Barry and Honey Sherman should be sealed from public view on the basis of privacy concerns. Ellie also advises clients on regulatory compliance in the health-care sector, including for virtual care and digital health initiatives. She assists clients to navigate health profession regulations, medicare regulations, conflicts of interest, regulatory licenses and approvals, and other specialized health sector regulations. Ellie joined Blakes after summering and articling with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General in the Legal Services Branch of the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care. Her scholarly work has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology. Ronak's practice focuses on privacy, data governance and data
protection. He advises national and international technology companies
and other data-centric organizations on matters relating to data use and
ownership, complex business transactions involving data-based assets,
outsourcing and artificial intelligence.Ronak has extensive
experience assisting clients with cross-border transfers, global privacy
compliance considerations, workplace privacy issues, developing data
inventories, anti-spam, misleading advertising, contests and promotions,
data ethics, and data governance. He also advises on data subject
rights requests, including access to, and correction of, personal
information. Clients regularly seek his counsel on the
implications of international privacy and data protection laws, as well
as undertaking enterprise-wide privacy audits and privacy check-ups. When
clients face investigations and complaints, Ronak appears before
privacy and data protection regulatory authorities on their behalf. He
works with clients in developing effective privacy training and
awareness, including breach preparedness and assists with managing
cybersecurity breaches and implementing remediation plans.
Ronak's
background in intellectual property, commercial contracting and
litigation allows him to assess relevant industry standards for data
protection, business objectives and legal risks when assisting clients
in designing privacy-centric practices. |
