Description:

There is more emphasis now than ever before on commercialization, company formation, and job creation from the billions of dollars invested annually in research and development at America's universities, government laboratories, and small businesses. Instructors

Hemant Bhimnathwala, Ph.D., Senior Manager, Argonne National Laboratory

Hemant is a Senior Innovation and Commercialization Manager at Argonne National Laboratory. His primary areas of focus are Argonne’s Energy Systems and Nuclear Engineering divisions. He joined Argonne in 2016.

Hemant has nearly 20 years of experience working in finance in various roles, including structured finance, venture capital, corporate strategy, mergers & acquisitions and hedge funds.
Hemant is an activist and has personally litigated for equal parental rights, including petitions to the US Supreme Court. His efforts have earned him recognition in Marquis Who’s Who in America. Hemant holds an MBA from New York University, a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a BTech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Mihaela Bojin, Ph.D., CLP, Senior Associate Director, University of Iowa Research Foundation

Mihaela Bojin is a Senior Associate Director at the University of Iowa Research Foundation (UIRF).  She has extensive expertise in intellectual capital management (licensing, business and intellectual property assessment, partnerships) in a variety of areas, such as pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, medical devices, and software.
Mihaela is a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a registered patent agent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  Since 2020, she has been included in the IAM Strategy 300, an elite global group of IP strategists.
Prior to joining UIRF, Mihaela was a patent agent at a New York City Intellectual Property Practice Group, an assistant professor on tenure track at the City University of New York, and a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Davis, and at New York University.  Mihaela holds a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from Cornell University, and a BSc in Chemistry from University of Bucharest, Romania.

Gillian M. Fenton, Esq., CLP, Executive Director, LST Strategies LLC

Gillian M. Fenton, Esq., CLP has been a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES, USA & Canada) since 1992, and served as the society President in 2020-2021.  Gillian’s contributions to LES and to the field of licensing were recognized with the society’s Frank Barnes Award in October 2022 and with listing in the IAM 300 in October 2023.  She presently serves as U.S. Counsel to LESI and is a member of the LES USA & Canada Public Policy Committee and Course Chair for IP Licensing Basics.

Gillian is the founder and executive director of LST Strategies LLC, a solo law practice dedicated to life science transactions.  For the prior 8 years, she was GSK Vaccines Special Counsel for Innovation and Government Collaborations.  At GSK, she supported a wide variety of business development transactions, R&D collaborations and U.S. Government Contracts including agreements with NIH/NIAID, BARDA, DARPA, CARB-X and NIIMBL.  Before joining GSK, Gillian was VP, Associate General Counsel & Chief Intellectual Property Counsel at Emergent BioSolutions Inc., where she founded the IP department and supported all IP aspects of the company’s IPO and subsequent 9 years of growth through M&A in the vaccines, biodefense, and global health fields.  Gillian also spent over ten years in private practice at law firms in Boston, MA and Washington, DC.

Education: J.D. cum laude, Suffolk University Law School; B.Sc. Biochemistry, Trinity College.

Lindsey Fisher, Managing Director, Stout Risius Ross

Lindsey has consulted in litigation matters spanning a wide range of industries such as bio-tech, telecommunications, utilities, consumer goods, e-commerce, financial institutions, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. She has conducted complex financial analyses and valuations. Her damages calculations have involved lost sales, lost profits, reasonable royalty, incremental profits, price erosion, unjust enrichment, risk assessments, financial forecasting, and prejudgment interest.

Lindsey has over 17 years of experience as a litigation consultant and damages expert and has consulted on over 80 intellectual property matters. She is recognized by Intellectual Property Management as a world leading patent professional and listed in the IAM Patent 1000.

Karthika Perumal, Ph.D., CLP, Partner- Technology, Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP

Karthika Perumal, Ph.D. is a Partner in the Technology Transactions practice of Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP. Karthika’s practice involves all aspects of technology law with an emphasis on the protection, acquisition, and monetization of intellectual property in the healthcare and energy sectors across a wide range of technologies, such as biotechnology, biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, oil and gas processing, and software. Karthika handles a variety of transactions, including multiparty collaborations, joint ventures, manufacturing, supply, distribution, and software development, service, and support agreements. She leverages her background in scientific research and technology transfer to help clients meet their business objectives at every stage of product development. Dell C. "D.C." Toedt III, Attorney, Professor Of Practice

D. C. Toedt (the last name is pronounced "Tate"), a member of the Texas and California bars, is an attorney, arbitrator, and part-time law professor; he is a past chair of the Houston chapter of the Licensing Executives Society (USA and Canada).

D.C. was formerly a partner and member of the management committee at Arnold, White & Durkee, at the time the second-largest IP litigation boutique in the U.S., with some 150lawyers in six cities. During the dot-com era, D.C. left AW&D to join a publicly-traded software company, BindView Corporation, as vice president and general counsel; as outside counsel, he had helped the founders to start the company. He served there until the company's successful "exit" when it was acquired by Symantec Corporation, the world leader in the company's field.

Among other publications, D.C. was the lead author of the first edition of a one-volume treatise, The Law and Business of Computer Software. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin in math (high honors) and law (law review); between college and law school he served his ROTC scholarship payback time as a U.S. Navy nuclear engineering officer in the Rickover program.
