The potential for technology startups to become viable entities in commercial markets depends on several factors. Two of these dynamics are global demand for the technology, driven by an interest in its capabilities and the other is funding for start-up projects that improve consumer experiences with technology interfaces. This webinar focuses on recent developments in two high-tech spaces that are impacting the growth of startups, or new industries from research projects. Professor Jian Zhao from the University of Waterloo, one of Canada's top technology research institutions, will talk about Metaverse projects undertaken by the institution, and Erik Valiquette, President of the Blockchain Supply Chain Association will talk about the increased growth and relevance of blockchain supply chain enterprises amid global supply chain challenges. | Erik Valiquettem, Blockchain Supply Chain Assocation Erik is the co-founder and CEO of the Blockchain Supply Chain Association. Through their core services of Advocacy, Collaboration and Education, they bring together like-minded professionals who want to explore Blockchain in their supply chain. The member-driven association's goal is to accelerate the adoption of Distributed Ledger Technology through dialog, to help shape policy with governmental agencies for improved services, and to help the community's voice to be heard. With a 30 year career in logistics, he’s passionate about bridging the gap between technology and business needs and is a firm believer that Blockchain has the potential to bring effectiveness global supply chain management. Erik is based in Montreal, Canada.

Jian Zhao is a Professor at the School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo. He develops novel interactive systems and visual representations that promote the interplay between humans, machines, and data. He focuses primarily on designing interactive visualization techniques to support complex analytical workflows: from exploratory data analysis, to model curation and explanation, and to insight communication and storytelling. He directs the WatVis (Waterloo Visualization) research group and is affiliated with the Waterloo Human Computer Interface Lab the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute (Waterloo.ai) and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA). Also, he has experience working at other leading industry research labs including Microsoft, IBM, and Adobe. He holds more than a dozen patents and some have successfully generated impact on products. |  | Marsha Simone Cadogan, MSC Intellectual Property & Technology Law Marsha Simone Cadogan is an intellectual property and technology lawyer in private practice (MSC Intellectual Property & Technology Law). Her professional background is in international intellectual property, trade, and technology law. Marsha is also a Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). She chairs the high technology sector startups subcommittee, and is involved in various other intellectual property and international law associations (member of Board of Directors – International Law Association – Canada). |
