Friday, December 15, 2017   (0 Comments)

Larry Udell, Chair of the Silicon Valley Chapter, moderated the panel discussion along with Soody Tronson.

"Licensing vs. New Venture" was the fourth installment of the Navigating Through the Invention Process: From Idea to Product to Market educational series. It was a joint meeting with the LES Silicon Valley Chapter and California Invention Center on Wednesday October 4, 2017 at the Silicon Valley USPTO.

Larry Udell, Chair of the LES-SVC and California Invention Center, explored the anatomy of a start-up and covered several decades of famous inventors that went through the inventive process. Soody Tronson, Founder and Principal, STLGip Intellectual Property Law Firm, also facilitated the panel. They were joined by guest speaker Ryan Koppelman, Partner, IP Litigation, Alston & Bird LLP and Program Chair, Licensing Executives Society, San Francisco Chapter.

Larry Udell commented on the key takeaway for the 42 attendees, "They learned the importance of licensing."

The series targets inventors and poses the question,"Got an idea but don't know where to start?"

It addresses turning ideas into new ventures. From researching and protecting their invention to packaging and marketing their product, each course targets steps they should consider for a successful product launch. Series topics include the following:

  • What is the patentability of my invention and how do I apply for a  patent?
  • How do I evaluate the market value of my invention?
  • Who are my competitors and what is the size of the market?
  • Should I consider going into business with my idea?
  • Should I consider licensing and collecting royalties?
  • Where do I find funding?
