Webinar: The Broader Impacts of Technology Licensing: New Directions For Technology Transfer Indicators

RTI International, a large nonprofit organization that conducts research, development, and program implementation for federal and other clients, has undertaken studies on federal government technology transfer for multiple federal agencies. As part of that work, experts at RTI have been exploring new approaches to developing new types of metrics and indicators that capture, characterize, and communicate the long-term impact of technology transfer activities. The metrics most commonly reported measure activities and outputs (patents granted, licenses executed) rather than impact. These methods use various approaches to link data records on technology licensing to external data sources to examine how licensed technologies can improve economic growth, public health, and the national innovation system. In this talk, Dr. Alexander will explain these new indicators, compare them to more traditional metrics, and discuss their advantages and limitations
