2019-02-06 13.02 HTS_ Cloud Services and Software_ Cryptocurrencies and Payment Platforms
Bitcoin was all over the news last year -- not for what it was or could be, but for its plunging price. But that was so 2018; it's a new year and the media has brighter and shinier things to cover. But that doesn't mean that Bitcoin and other digital currencies are any less revolutionary.
Digital currency (a/k/a “cryptocurrency”) is the future of money, according to witnesses at a recent Congressional hearing. Not only will those currencies spur worldwide electronics payments platforms, they will afford people of the world broader access to financial systems and markets. To the extent backed by stable central banks, moreover, cryptocurrencies could reduce some of the risks that dominated the news of late. To play the obvious pun, the rise of digital currencies will not come without cost. There will be winners and losers throughout the ecosystem, whether it be investors, financial institutions, retailers, consumers, .... you name it. Upheaval is likely to be the order of the day, for years to come, as currency and financial markets are transformed.
