The Panel will discuss some of the opportunities, issues and challenges of commercializing big data. Universities and hospital systems are frequently repositories of large data sets that have utility in advancing their research, education and patient care objectives, but also have commercial potential. In many case these data sets are linked to with human subject data, and many institutions are wrestling with the question how and even if such data should be used to develop new products and services. If so, many issues need to be considered, including patient privacy, reputation, and how access to the data is provided. Revenue from companies looking for patterns and trends in large sets of complex data continues to grow, and an ever increasing number of start-ups are active in this space or are developing new data analysis tools. With representation from various stakeholders working in this space, the panel will provide a broad perspective on how to navigate this expanding opportunity represented by this growing field.
